This marks the third time at the same time launched the production of Ford and NASCAR version of the new model. The launch of the first double came in 1968, with a sleek fastback Ford Torino. NASCAR legend David Pearson Torino push for back-to-back NASCAR championships in 1968 and 1969. The second time came in 2006, when the then newly-introduced Ford Fusion appeared in showrooms and on the track.

Ford took a different approach to the development of Fusion 2013 racer. Ford Design Center staff, led by Garen Nicoghosian, and Ford aerodynamic Bernie Marcus, spent last year doing the initial design development, freeing Ford racing team to concentrate on a weekly NASCAR competition.
As quoted by Auto Car Update from Lincah (Sunday, May 6, 2012), the new NASCAR Fusion entries will be tested throughout the 2012 campaign in preparation for their racing debut at the 2013 Daytona 500 in February.
